EQ and Relationship Quality — the data A 2018 meta-analysis in Journal of Research in Personality (Malouff et al.) examined 27 studies on the relationship between emotional intelligence and romantic relationship quality. Higher EQ in either partner was significantly associated with greater relationship satisfaction, fewer conflicts, more constructive conflict resolution, and higher sexual satisfaction. The effect was consistent across gender — but when only male EQ was examined, the association with relationship quality was stronger than for female EQ, suggesting men's EQ may have a disproportionate effect on relationship outcomes.

The Loneliness Research A 2019 study in American Psychologist found that men reported significantly fewer close friendships, less intimate disclosure in existing friendships, and higher rates of loneliness than women — with the gap increasing with age. Social isolation is now classified as a risk factor for early mortality equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2015, Perspectives on Psychological Science). The masculine norm of self-sufficiency is a direct contributor to male social isolation.
